Population and household - estimates and projections
The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) produces mid year population estimates every year for Scotland and its administrative areas. The population estimates are produced using the demographic cohort component method. The estimates are based on the 2001 Census.
Population projections for Scotland are normally prepared every two years by the
Government Actuary's Department (GAD) in consultation with, and at the request of, the
GROS. The Demography Branch uses these projections as a basis for preparing consistent sub-national projections for the local authority and health board areas of Scotland. The intention is to publish future projections every 2 years, whenever possible.
Household estimates and projections were previously produced by the Scottish Executive's housing statistics branch. This work has now been transferred to
GROS, and a new branch has been set up to review the methodologies used, develop closer links between population and household statistics, and develop small area household estimates.
Please note: The population estimates for 2003 to 2006 have been revised after the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) reviewed their methodology. The revisions affect 6 council areas including Perth and Kinross. The revisions were published on the 27 July 2007 and these revised estimates replace the previously published estimates. Further information on the revised mid-year population estimates 2003-2006 can be found on the
GROS website.
