Disabled Person's Reduction

Disabled Person's Reduction is a reduction in the Valuation Banding of a property due to a person with physical disabilities living in the house.

The person with physical disabilities can be anyone who has their main residence in the house, adult or child.

The disability must be substantial and permanent.

One of the following features must be present to meet the specific needs of the disabled person:

  • an additional bathroom
  • an additional kitchen
  • use of a wheelchair inside the house
  • a room has been provided to cater for the disabled persons specific needs

The amount of the reduction is the difference between the actual Valuation Band and the Band below it.

From 1/4/2000, new Council Tax legislation came into force with regard to band A properties.  Band A properties will now qualify for a reduction which is calculated at 5/9th for the Band D charge.
