Council tax - late or non payment
Remember that paying by Direct Debit ensures that your payments are
made on time every month.
You can download a
Direct Debit Instruction Form [PDF: 50Kb] that will
help you set up an account.
Council Tax is payable by instalments from 1st April to 1st January
or in one lump sum on or before the 1st June.
Late Payments
You need to pay your Council Tax bill by instalments by the due
dates stated on your bill. If you miss one full instalment
you will fall into arrears and you will have to bring your account
up to date within 7 days of being asked.
If you fail to bring your instalments up to date you will lose the
right to pay by instalments and you will then be liable to pay the
outstanding balance in full. For a current financial year,
were payments by instalment are applicable a maximum of two
reminders can be issued.
Please note you will not have another chance to pay by instalments
and no further reminders will be sent.
Non Payments
Any unpaid arrears are recoverable by Summary Warrant
proceedings with the addition of a 10% penalty.
Recovery action can lead to:
- you being asked for details of your employment and bank
accounts
- your earnings being arrested
- your bank account being arrested
- the Sheriff Officer George Walker & Co
being involved in the recovery process
- deductions being made from your income support
