Perth royal burgh charter
Conserved Perth Charter on display for Perth 800
The ancient document which confirmed Perth Royal Burgh
status in 1210 -
the Perth Charter - has been expertly conserved for the Perth
800 celebrations in 2010
The
conservation work was carried out free of charge by the
National Archive of Scotland in Edinburgh. The official wax seal
has been reattached and the parchment has been repaired and cleaned
up. The Charter has also been placed in a new custom-made display
case.
The Charter was granted by King William the Lion in 1210
and is kept in the Archive of Perth & Kinross
Council.
Council Archivist Steve Connelly said: 'The Charter is a very
significant document in the history of Perth and so we were
delighted that the opportunity came up to have this work done on
it. It will help ensure that the Charter will still be available
for future generations to appreciate'.
Written in Latin, an
explanation and
translation of the Charter are available on these pages
