57,000 records now online
Family history website Ancestry UK have digitised several of
P&KC Archive's collections, which are now available online.
Covering more than 300 years of Scottish history, you can look for
ancestors and download images of documents.
A pay per view service, Ancestry
offers the opportunity to those who can't easily visit the Archive
to view some original records. However, as part of the partnership
between Ancestry and P&K Council, users can access the site for
free if they do through their local Perth and Kinross library
Available collections include:
The registers of schools in Perthshire include the date of
a pupil's admission to the school, the name and date of birth of
the child, name and address of their parent or guardian, the last
school attended, and the date and reason for leaving. It was the
responsibility of the Head Teacher to keep these records and update
them on a weekly basis. However, not all records are complete and
they sometimes omitted to fill in all the columns, especially the
reason for leaving. Most of these registers cover schools in
Perthshire that have since closed.
In 1802 a form was sent out to householders within the Burgh of
Perth requiring them to list the name of every man in their house
aged 18 to 45, who was liable for service with the militia. The
returns may include the name and occupation of the householder, the
street, and the names of any inhabitants eligible for
service.
These are registers of bonds, acts, obligations, and other
legal transactions relating to the Royal Burgh of Perth.
Transactions were often documented in case disputes arose later,
and these records include items such as bonds, sales contracts,
receipts, charter, protests, and dispositions.
As with all collections, these will contain gaps in the
information they carry. And they are simply a taste
of the amount and
kinds of collections we hold at P&KC Archive.
