Heraldry 800
Heraldry 800 Competition
Prizegiving
All the winners, their friends and families came to the
prize-giving by Provost John Hulbert in the AK Bell Library as part
of the Light Night celebrations. Prize-winners had their designs
made into a large shield for display in their school, and a smaller
framed copy to keep for themselves. You can see the finished
designs below by just clicking each link:
The competition was open to pupils in P1-S2 and all the entries
were on display and generated a lot of interest and admiration. You
can see samples of the entries below:
Heraldry 800 was a competition to get pupils to produce a coat
of arms demonstrating what is important about their community, its
history and culture. Resource packs were designed to help them
understand the basics of heraldry and to show them what kinds of
archives can help them discover their community's history and
culture.
One of the reasons for doing the competition was to encourage
pupils to work together and explore their community. The high
quality of all the entries are testament to their enthusiasm, but
we hope the following comment was felt by all the pupils who took
part:
'..this was a super activity. The children worked in co-operative
learning groups. It initiated lots of great research, discussion
and negotiation, culminating in a delightful product with which
everyone at school is very happy!'
