James II charter to Carthusians, 1455

Written in Latin, this charter by King James II grants £60 per annum to the Carthusian monastery near Perth. The money comes from various of the burgh's duties and customs.
Witnesses: James, William, John and George bishops of St Andrews, Glasgow, Moray & Brechin, William earl of Orkney Lord of St Claire King's chancellor, James Lindessay, Keeper of the Privy Seal, Thomas Lord Erskyn, William Lord Somervile, Robert Lord Fflemyng, King's household master and Patrick Lord Glamys.

King James I founded the Charterhouse or Carthusian monastery in Perth in 1429 for a prior and 12 monks. This was the first and only Carthusian monastery founded in Scotland and was known as 'the Vale of Virtue'. Sited where the King James VI Hospital now stands, the monastery was destroyed during the Reformation in 1559
