Game book extract, 1846

Hunting, shooting and fishing were major recreational activities for the landed gentry. Leasing land for these sports could also be a lucrative source of income.

This extract is from the game book of 5th Baronet Patrick Murray Threipland (1800-1882) of Fingask Castle. Beginning the week of 21 September, it notes who went out shooting, where they went and what they bagged, which was grouse, partirdge, hare and rabbit. Other pages provide more details on how the shoots went, and how they disposed of the game. Note that on Sunday, Threipland decided to complete his week in the outdoors by skipping attendance at church and gong for a walk instead.
