Sparring match poster, 1852

This sparring match was probably based on the London Prize Ring rules, which introduced a ring and separate rounds, while kicking, gouging and butting were declared fouls. Despite new rules boxing remained a brutal sport, but it was popular because it allowed the display of prowess and attracted gambling.

The advertisement emphasises the manliness of boxing and its entertainment value, highlighted by the music that was to be played. This alone might have attracted participants as well as spectators, but the prize money also suggests that it could be a lucrative living for a strong and agile working-class lad.
