Wallace Works Ball dance card, 1905

The Wallace Works in Perth was the site of the foremost manufacturer of fine damask linen, owned by J Shields & Co.. In keeping with the paternalistic attitude of many manufacturers, particularly those that had a large female workforce, employees were provided with special facilities. Wallace Works boasted a grand canteen, while annual balls, along with summer outings were another means of fostering workforce loyalty.

Note how the dance card not only lists the dances, but also provides space for the women to note who their partners will be for each dance.
