What is Bookstart?

Bookstart is the first national books for babies programme in the world. It provides free packs of books to encourage parents to share books with their babies. Bookstart believes that children are never too young to start loving books and aims for every home to be a place where learning is valued and books are fun.

There are three fantastic free packs of books for all 0-3 year olds in Perth and Kinross:

  • Bookstart baby bag for young babies (given out by health visitors)
  • Bookstart+ bag for toddlers (given out by health visitors)
  • Bookstart treasure chest for 3 year olds (given out at nurseries and libraries)

There are also Bookshine bags for deaf children age 0-4 and Booktouch bags for visually impaired children.

Libraries, health visitors and nurseries work together to try to make sure that all families receive their packs. If by any chance you missed getting a Bookstart pack, then pop in to your local library and collect one.

Our libraries welcome babies as soon as they are born and provide a fantastic resource of board books, Bookstart Rhythm & Rhyme sessions and Bookstart Book Crawl library awards.

If you would like more information please phone 01738 477067/8 or email bookstart@pkc.gov.uk.
