1863 Perth Map
Copies of the incredibly detailed Ordnance Survey Perth Town maps of 1863 are available to use in the
Local Studies section of the
AK Bell Library. At a scale of 1/500, the maps show in a great amount of detail the locations of such things as pillar boxes, sundials and pumps as well as the shapes of houses, buildings and streets which have long ago disappeared from the Perth landscape.
This set of maps will be invaluable to any researcher involved in local Victorian projects or anyone looking for names of houses or businesses, locations of pubs, schools or churches mentioned in their family history research. Comparisons with later maps (1901) at a similar scale will allow us to build up a detailed picture of how the city has changed and evolved as different industries and trades grew or declined.
To see this extremely useful addition to the library's collection of treasures, come to the
Local Studies section on the first floor of the
AK Bell Library. Staff are always happy to help with local enquiries.
