The Fergusson Gallery Collection
The Fergusson Gallery in Perth holds the largest collection of John Duncan Fergusson's (1874-1961) work in existence. It was gifted to Perth and Kinross by the J D Fergusson Arts Foundation in 1990.
J D Fergusson was a prolific artist and an associated member of the Scottish Colourist group. He produced a vast array of drawings, paintings and sculptures during a career that spanned over 60 years. The Fergusson Gallery holds a fantastic selection of work covering every period in Fergusson's life.
There are over 5,000 works of art, including over 150 oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks and sculptures. In addition we hold over 6,000 archival items, which includes photographs, letters, books, newscuttings, and personal items.
Highlights of the collection
The White Ruff, 1907; Self-Portrait, 1907; Le Manteau Chinois, 1909; At My Studio Window, 1910; Summer 1914, 1934; Eastre: Hymn to the Sun, 1924; The Ochre Coat, 1933 and Danu, Mother of the Gods, 1952-53.
Other Artists
We also collect the work of artists related to Fergusson, such as the work of his life-long partner Margaret Morris, and members of the New Scottish Group, which was formed by Fergusson in Glasgow in 1943. This includes James Morrison McChlery, Babs Redpath, Kim Redpath, William Rennie, Carlo Rossi, William Senior, Betty Simpson, Nathaniel Smith, William Vannet and Hella Young.
The collection is extended annually with the donation of a work by the J D Fergusson Arts Award winner presented annually by the J D Fergusson Arts Award Trust.
