SOME THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT JAMES
James was the son of Thomas Cranstoun a naval surgeon and
his wife Jean Dalrymple
James moved to Perth about 1849
James was appointed visiting Art Master at Glenalmond College near
Perth in 1855/6
James held the post at Glenalmond for seventeen and a
half years making over 1,000 journeys from home in that
time
James was a lifelong friend of Sir William Quiller Orchardson who
painted members of Cranstoun's family
James had a sister Jane Cranstoun and a brother Charles Dalrymple
Cranstoun who also lived in Perth
James ran a private Drawing Academy from his studio in Atholl
Street between 1854 and 1859
James renamed his Drawing Academy the Classical Academy in
1860 and continued to run it until 1897/8
James was a landscape painter who favoured oils but also
worked in watercolour
James was involved in the organisation of the 1883 Perth Fine Art
Exhibition in which he also exhibited
