Barnhill Mercury figurine
Last updated | 14/09/2010
This small bronze figurine of the Roman god Mercury was found in a
garden in Barnhill, Perth in 1936. In the early 20th century
a souterrain was discovered in the same vicinity and the two may be
related. Mercury is shown holding a purse or money-bag.
He was a popular god with merchants and was also invoked as the
protector of the pay of the Roman army. The figurine may have
belonged to a soldier or have been traded to the souterrain owners.
