The Bird Collection
Last updated | 28/09/2010
Perth Museum and Art Gallery is home to a very impressive
collection of bird specimens from around the world. There are over
700 specimens from South America including hummingbirds, Andean
condors and toucans that were collected over a hundred years ago.
There is also a near complete skeleton of a moa from New Zealand
and even a specimen of the extinct passenger pigeon of North
America.
There are over 2000 individual eggs in the egg collection. These
eggs were also largely collected about a hundred years ago at
a time when people viewed egg collecting as a hobby.
Our comprehensive collection of native bird specimens covers most
of the birds likely to be found in the British Isles and offer an
excellent resource for identification purposes. The
bird collection includes many skins, mounts, skeletons and
even nests and is the fifth largest collection of
avian specimens in Scotland.
