The Lepidoptera Collection
Last updated | 31/08/2010
Butterflies and moths belong to the Lepidoptera order and are among
the most popular and well known insects among the public. The
Lepidoptera Collection at Perth Museum and Art Gallery has
about 35 000 specimens from the British Isles and about 5000
specimens from abroad. There is a long history (since 1800) of
naturalists collecting butterflies and moths from Perthshire and as
a result we are able to determine changes in the distribution of
certain species that have become extinct in one area or have
appeared in another area.
