The Strathmore Meteorite

Last updated | 31/08/2010

This is one of the fragments of a meteorite that crashed into Tayside on December 3rd 1917.  It was a cold clear winters day and many people in the East of Scotland witnessed the meteor, at around 1pm, enter the atmosphere east of Dunbar. The meteorite broke up as it passed over the Sidlaw Hills. Four different fragments were found along a five mile line from Corston in Angus to Essendy in Perthshire.

This is the fragment found at South Corston Farm, near Coupar Angus. It made a six inch deep hole in the farmhouse lawn. It is on display in Perth Museum & Art Gallery in the "Wild and Wonderful Perthshire" section.

Another fragment hit the roof of the South Lodge at Keithick, on the outskirts of Coupar Angus.  The largest fragment weighed 22 pounds and landed amongst a flock of sheep near to Blairgowrie.
