Communion Tokens

The D.L. Edwards Collection
Mr D. L. Edwards donated a collection of
communion tokens to Perth Museum & Art Gallery in
1935.
It is a comprehensive collection on a global scale, with examples
from many churches around the world. Its main focus is the tokens
of the Scottish churches, used as a means of authorising who could
partake of communion at church services.
The variety of the tokens, and the churches they were collected
from, help us to appreciate the divisions in the Protestant Church
after the Reformation.
The tokens are arranged alphabetically by parish in an easy to
access drawer display unit and reveal a wealth of historical
insight as well as an interesting variety of designs and
lettering.
The financial assistance of Museums Galleries Scotland in enhancing
the stewardship and accessibility of this collection is gratefully
acknowledged.
