For the Kirk of Perth
Last updated | 01/09/2010
St John's Kirk plate is one of the most outstanding collections
of church silver and pewter
St John's Kirk in Perth is the oldest building
in Perth, and an important building in the religious history of
Scotland. John Knox famously preached the Protestant Reformation
here on 11 May 1559 as a result of which untold destruction
was caused to the religious houses within the City by unruly
townsfolk who were incited by his sermon.
The collection consists of 16
examples of communion cups and flagons,
a baptismal basin and collecting plates.
These items date from the 16th to 18th centuries, and were made
variously in Dundee, Edinburgh, London and Nuremberg.
The silver, parcel-gilt, baptismal basin is the earliest surviving
example of such an item from the Church of Scotland.
