History of Alyth Museum
Last updated | 24/03/2010
The premises in Commercial Street were acquired in 1893 to house the Loyal Alyth Public Library which had been established under a Deed of Bequest made by The Hon William Ogilvy of Loyal in 1870.
By 1947 the Library was in decline and in 1965 its function was transferred to the Perth County Council Library Service.
In 1970 a meeting was held to find a new use for the former library premises. It was eventually agreed to set up the Alyth Folk Museum, which was formally opened on 9 September 1972. Originally run by a Trust and staffed by volunteers, the museum found itself in difficulties by 1976 and applied to Perth & Kinross District Council to take it over.
In 1981 the Court of Session in Edinburgh approved a cy pres scheme whereby the Museum and its collections were transferred to Perth & Kinross District Council. Since that date Alyth Museum has been open during the summer months.
Alyth Museum is fully accredited and enjoys Visit Scotland three star rating.
