The St Madoes stone is a masterpiece of the early medieval stone carver's art
Dating to the eighth century AD the St Madoes stone is a Pictish cross-slab.
The front of the massive sculpture bears a Christian cross carved in relief and decorated with spiral, interlace and key patterns, flanked by biting beasts.
The back of the stone shows three cloaked and hooded horsemen - probably clerics - and three Pictish symbols, worn away by exposure to the elements.
