Recognised Collection of National Significance

Scotland's cultural portfolio would be poorer without Perth's collection

  • The Recognition Scheme is a Scottish Government initiative launched in 2007 to formally recognise and help support museum collections of nationally significant material held by non National organisations
  • The Recognition scheme is administered on behalf of the Scottish Government by Museums Galleries Scotland (formerly the Scottish Museums Council)
  • Perth's entire collection was officially recognised in October 2007, at the time the only local authority collection to be so recognised
  • Perth submitted an application in support of its bid for Recognition which was assessed by an independent review panel chaired by the prominent Edinburgh solicitor Douglas Connell
  • Perth's bid was endorsed by over 50 academics, researchers, specialists and users who from practical contact with the collection could speak with authority on its strengths, range and depth
  • Perth & Kinross Council recognised this major achievement by hosting a Civic Reception which was held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery in January 2008
  • Recognised status provides a distinctive branding which is displayed at each of Perth's 3 facilities; Perth Museum and Art Gallery, Alyth Museum and The Fergusson Gallery
  • Recognised status provides access to the Recognition Fund to assist in improving access to recognised collections and collections care for such collections
  • Perth successfully secured a Recognition Fund Award to improve signage on and around its facilities and the purchase of demountable temporary display cases
  • Perth's bid involved a lot of hard work, part of which was the pulling together of a collections bibliography which continues to be updated
