Primary School Enrolment
Will Your Child Be Five Before 28 February 2013?
Then It's Time To Enrol Them For School!
The next school session begins on Tuesday 14 August
2012.
Parents/carers whose children will be five on or before that
date must register their children to start school by
during the week 16 January 2012 - 20 January
2012.
What Happens If My Child Is Five Between 15 August 2012
and 28 February 2013?
These children are eligible to start school
on Tuesday 14 August 2012 and you
should register your child for primary school.
However, nearer to the start of the school year you may wish to
delay your child's entry [pdf 243KB] to school if you
think that they are not ready to start. You should discuss this
with staff at your child's nursery who will be able to help you
make the best decision for your child. If you decide to delay your
child's entry to primary school you will be able to withdraw your
child's registration form. It would be appreciated if you
could make this decision by 31 May 2012.
Further information on deferred entry is available from all primary
schools.
How Will My Child Be Placed In A School?
Each school has a defined zone known as a catchment
area, and offers places in that school to pupils resident
within that area.
How Do I Register My Child For Primary School?
Parents/carers should visit their local catchment area primary
school during the week 16 January 2012 - 20 January 2012 to
register their child. When you register your child you will
need to take your child's birth certificate and also your latest
Council Tax bill and a recent utility bill as proof that you live
permanently at your address, as well as completing the
registration form [pdf 252KB]. The
registration form is also available in Polish [pdf:
388KB]. If you are registering at a denominational
school and your child has been baptised you should also take their
baptismal certificate.
Early Registration
Parents who enquire about the possibility of early registration
(ie, of children whose fifth birthday falls after the last day of
February) should note that early entry is discouraged, but are
advised to contact Education & Children's Services, Pullar
House, 35 Kinnoull Street, Perth, PH1 5GD for details of the
special appeals procedure whereby such requests are considered.
What Happens If I Want To Send My Child To A Primary School
Outside My Local Catchment Area?
Although it is usual for children to attend their local
catchment area school, parents/carers have the right to make a
placing request asking that their children be placed in a
school other than their local catchment area school.
Education Authorities have a duty to grant placing requests
wherever possible. We will try to grant your request,
provided there are places at the school you choose. Requests should
be made on the appropriate form by 15 March
2012. Should parents/carers wish their child to
attend a primary school other than their local catchment area
school, they should not register their child at
the local catchment school.
Placing request application forms [pdf 18KB] and
further information [pdf 478KB] can also be obtained from any
Perth & Kinross Council school or from the address detailed
below. Any requests made after this date will still be
considered, but it is possible that places in certain schools may
no longer be available. It should be noted that where a
successful placing request is made parents/carers must
accept full responsibility for the arrangement and cost of
transport to and from the school.
If a placing request is refused, parents can lodge an
Appeal in writing which would then be heard by an Appeals
Committee.
What is a Composite Class?
Primary schools have pupils at seven year stages, Primary 1 -
Primary 7. A year or stage is defined as a group of children
entering primary education at a common date. A
composite class [pdf 155KB] is one where children of two or
more year stages are grouped together to form a class.
Gaelic Medium Education
Gaelic Medium Education [pdf 75KB] is available to
children entering P1 and P2 in August 2012 and currently offered at
Breadalbane Primary School, Aberfeldy and Goodlyburn Primary
School, Perth. Parents from out with the catchment areas for these
schools can make a placing request. More information on Gaelic
Medium Education can be found in the
download section of this page or by calling 01738
477869.
Information Available To Parents
Basic information on the provision of school education in Perth
and Kinross, including the Authority's placing arrangements, is
available for reference from Perth and Kinross Council's
website: www.pkc.gov.uk or obtained
from any Perth & Kinross Council school, or from the address
detailed below. Information about a particular school can be
obtained from the Headteacher of that school. All schools
publish a handbook and a school improvement plan each year.
Handbooks are available from every school from 15
December and give general information about the
school. The school improvement plan is also available from
the school and gives a snapshot of the school's achievements over
the past year.
