Education Maintenance Allowance

What is Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?

EMA is a weekly payment of £10, £20 or £30 paid directly to a young person from a family whose annual household income is £32,316 or less (this figure is subject to change from 1 April 2009).

Education Maintenance Allowances are available to eligible students remaining in full time education beyond the statutory school leaving age of 16, and whose date of birth falls on or between 1 March 1989 and 28 February 1993 (for academic year 2008/2009).

How much could I receive through Education Maintenance Allowance payments?

Payments will only be made to those young people who have satisfied the attendance requirements.  Payments can be received for every week of the academic year except holidays.  Up to two in-year bonuses of £150 each will be paid, subject to the young person showing satisfactory progress against learning objectives set in a learning agreement.
