What is an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?

EMA is a weekly payment of £30 per week which can be paid to you if you are eligible and you are in education or a voluntary placement after you are legally permitted to leave school. 

It can be paid for a maximum of 3 years (4 years for vulnerable young people who may need additional time to further their potential).

To apply for the 2012/2013 academic session, your date of birth must fall on or between 1 March 1993 and 28 February 1997.

How much could I receive through EMA payments?

EMA awards will be payable according to the total taxable income of your household. Payments will only be made for the weeks where you have satisfied the attendance requirements. 

        • The award is £30 per week paid fortnightly in arrears directly into your bank account, you will be required to open one

  • The income threshold is £20,351. There is an additional higher threshold of £22,403 for families with more than one child in the household.
