Safer Routes to School
Do you have road safety concerns around your local school?
Safer Routes to School is an initiative that aims to create a safer environment around schools, leaving parents and children free to feel safer when choosing more sustainable alternatives for the school journey. As part of this initiatve schools are advised to develop a School Travel Plan (STP), a strategy that identifies local issues relating to the school journey.
The main purpose of the school travel plan is to reduce the number of vehicles on the school run helping ease congestion on the routes around the school. This helps encourage and promote more active journeys to/from school for both pupils and staff which also helps improve road safety. The STP identifies any problems with the whole school community and with the local community and sets actions in place to provide solutions.
If there are road safety issues you would like addressed, please contact your local school in the first instance to find out about their STP or offer your support.
If you are a parent/carer or education professional and would like further information on the STP process and how to develop a STP, this can be found on GLOW, Scotland's intranet for schools. Please contact you local school about access to GLOW.
