Children and Youth Rights Information

Perth and Kinross Council and Who Cares? Scotland promote and support the rights and responsibilities of children and young people.

Our children and youth rights and independent advocacy workers will:

  • listen to you and respect you and your views
  • explain what your rights and responsibilities are
  • help you speak out and be listened to
  • respect your rights and promote positive attitudes, views and behaviours towards children and young people

Usually what you talk to us about is treated as private and confidential and we will not tell anyone else without your permission.  However, it is our duty to involve other Services if we feel that what you tell us puts you or another person at risk - if this happens we will always talk things through with you first.

Who Cares Scotland LogoWho Cares? Scotland speaks out for children and young people who are being cared for away from home or who live at home but may need protection.  They have a young person's worker in most areas.  You can get in touch with the worker for the Perth & Kinross area by phoning 01382 202888 or by phoning or sending a text to 07764145126.  You can find out more about Who Cares? Scotland on their website at http://www.whocaresscotland.org

It doesn't matter which worker you contact as both will do their best to help you, and they will put you in touch with the right worker for you.

What Are Your Rights?

Every child and young person under the age of 18 has rights.  Nearly all the countries in the world have agreed that children and young people have basic rights and these rights are protected by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Here are some of your basic rights that you may want to know about.  If you can't find what your are looking for then get in touch.

  • Life: you have the right to life, survival and development
  • Health: you have the right to good health
  • Education: you have the right to a good education
  • Protection: you have the right to be protected from things that may harm you
  • Family: you have the right to be with your family unless being with your family means that you are denied or won't get all or some of your other rights
  • Identity: you have the right to an identity
  • Opinions: you and your opinions should be respected, but you must also respect the rights and responsibilities of other people too, especially those who care for you
  • Equality: you have the right to all of the rights that children have no matter where you come from
  • Play: you have the right to play

You can find out more about your rights by going to www.youngscot.org/channels/law/
