Getting It Right Program

Last updated | 08/03/2011

The aim of this incentive programme is to encourage young people with whom we work, and who have been in the care system at some point, to engage in different services that we think can make a real positive difference to the lives of young people.

For example, we know that many young people do not have a doctor or dentist or know if they have had the jags they should have had at school.  These may not seem important to young people, but from experience, when you fall ill or get toothache, it becomes a real problem if you don't have a GP or dentist.  Therefore, our colleagues who work in the Young People's Health Team can ensure that we can get these for you.

We also know that young people who have been in the care system tend to struggle with finding the right training and/or employment.  Therefore, that is why we ask our colleagues at Careers to help us get the best opportunities for you on the right course or job with the right supports.  This way, if we get it right at this stage, there is a greater chance that you will make any training placement or employment work.  We also know that if you make a training placement or employment work, lots of other parts of your life tend to work better.  So that's why we place so much importance on you securing a training scheme, a College placement or employment.

We share an office with Youth Services in the City Base.  They work around all schools throughout Perth & Kinross.  They have fantastic training opportunities, volunteering opportunities, and great links with Colleges and Universities.  They provide support about housing, careers, health, counselling sessions around sexual health and drug and alcohol awareness sessions.  The list goes on and on.  This is a fantastic opportunity, and has the potential to ensure that you get the right support that you need to make your future a success.

We also know that young people's circumstances change, and that is why it is important for you to take part in a Pathway's review.  This simply ensures that we get the right supports for you as your circumstances change.  We share the same goal as you do, in that we want your future to be a success.  All a review does is recognise the progress you have made and highlights the areas where you may need some support to keep this progress going.

All we ask is that you attend one session with each of these agencies to claim your £10.  If you choose not go back, then that is your choice.  We would however like you to maintain contact with all of these agencies until such times as you, and we, believe that they are no longer needed.  However if you change your mind, then that door will always be open for you.

Any young person who qualifies for a service from the Throughcare and Aftercare Team can access this program.  Attached is an example of a card [pdf 805KB] which you can take to:

  • An initial appointment with the Young People's Health Team
  • An initial appointment with Careers Scotland
  • Have your initial personal profile completed with Youth Services
  • Participate in a Pathways review

After each appointment, the agencies will sign and date the card.  Once the card has been completed, the allocated Throughcare and Aftercare Worker will validate it and once validated, send out a £10 mobile phone voucher of your choice.  (Only one card can be validated each 6 months)
