Homelessness

What should I do if I am homeless?

If you are homeless or think you may become homeless in the next 2 months you should contact your local Area Team, or the Homeless Advice Centre as soon as you can.

It is very important that you get in touch straight away as we may be able to:

  • prevent you losing your home;
  • offer you somewhere to stay;
  • help you find other accommodation;
  • arrange short term accommodation, and
  • contact other agencies able to help you.

What happens when I get in touch?

We will arrange an interview with a trained Homeless Advice Officer. We understand that being homeless is a very difficult situiation. Our services are free, confidential, professional and understanding. Our Homeless Service staff are fully trained to offer all information and advice you may need.

Emergency Homelessness

If you are homeless now and our offices are closed you can contact our Emergency Homeless Service on freephone 0800 917 0708 for emergency advice, assistance or accommodation. For more information please click on the link above.

Securing the Future 2009 awards
In May 2009 The Homeless Team was awarded with a Silver Securing the Future award for their innovative idea of private sector leasing scheme (more information on the scheme on our pages about temporary accommodation). Simply, private landlords lease properties to the Council and we use them as temporary homes for those in need. Since January 2008 70 families and 100 children were given a temporary home instead of a place in Bed and Breakfast.
