Notification of entitlement

Once your entitlement has been calculated, you will be issued with a notification letter advising you of our decision.  If you have claimed both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, you will receive a letter for each benefit. 

Your Letter Explained

You can download an example letter from our downloads section (right hand side of this page).  This offers a response to the most frequently asked questions regarding notification letters.

Your letter contains a lot of information as required by legislation.  If you have any queries regarding the content of these letter(s), please do not hesitate to contact us.

It is important that when you receive a notification letters, you ensure that the information contained in these letters is correct and that you understand how we have calculated your Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit entitlement.  If any details are wrong, you must inform us straight away.

Your Start Date of Entitlement

Usually, your start date of entitlement will be the Monday following the date that your application has been treated as being made, however may be awarded from an earlier date, depending upon your circumstances.

You cannot be awarded Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit until you start living in your property.

Changes In Circumstances

Enclosed with each letter, you will find a Change In Circumstances form which you should retain in the event that your circumstances change in the future.

Information on Changes In Circumstances

If you notify us of a Change In Circumstances or your entitlement to either Housing or Council Tax Benefit changes for another reason (for example changes to Legislation), you will receive fresh notification letters advising you of your new entitlement, how this has been calculated and what you can do if you think our decision is wrong.

What to Do If You Think Our Decision is Wrong

It is always advised that when you receive a notification letter advising you of your new entitlement or a change to your current or future entitlement to either Housing or Council Tax Benefit, you check the information contained within the letter and check the details to ensure that your benefit has been calculated using the correct information.  If you are unsure of any of the content, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01738 476049.
