Private Landlord Training

Perth and Kinross Council's private rented sector training courses have been very popular since their introduction in February 2007.  The courses are free to attend and are held in the Theatre at the AK Bell Library in the centre of Perth.

The courses are delivered by individuals/organisations that work in the private rented sector and who are experts in their particular field.

The next series of courses will take place in September/October 2008 and are detailed below.

  • Finance Matters - Chiene & Tait, Chartered Accountants

Thursday 25th September 2008 - 2.00pm to 5.00pm

This course will give an overview of the issues which should be considered when buying, renting and disposing of property in order to maximise the benefits of current tax legislation.  It will also cover how to maintain effective financial and book-keeping records and the types of insurance cover which shou be considered when renting property.


  • Marketing your Property and Deposits

John Blackwood - Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL)

Thursday 16th October 2008 - 2.00pm to 5.00pm

This course is designed to inform landlords and letting agents on how to market and stage their properties effectively in a highly competitive letting environment.  The course will also cover best practice when dealing with tenants' deposits and will address the many varied problems relating to creating holding deposits and making deductions from security deposits.  Other aspects covered will include dealing with guarantors and distance selling.

  • The Law of Repairs

Jim Bauld - TC Young Solicitors

Monday 20th October 2008 - 2.00pm to 4.30pm

This course is essential for both new and experienced landlords and letting agents.  On 03rd September 2007, important changes in the laws covering the responsibilities of landlords to carry out repairs came into effect.  This course will cover landlords' statutory and common-law repairing obligations and will look at the remedies available to tenants when landlords fail to fulfill their obligations.  The course will also cover gas and electrical safety and furniture and fire safety regulations.
