Re-Registering a Birth

Your child’s birth can be re-registered if you wish to add the natural father’s details or if the parents have married each other since the birth.

Adding the natural father’s details

If the parents are unmarried and would like the natural father’s details added to the birth record, they need to re-register the birth so that a new birth record can be created showing the father's details.

The natural parents have married each other since the birth

If the natural parents have married each other since the birth, they can re-register the birth so that a new birth record can be created showing the parent's marriage.

How to re-register a birth

In certain circumstances a re-registration can be dealt with by any registration office but more complex applications will be dealt with by General Register Office (Scotland).  Please contact your local registration office for more information.
