Naming ceremonies

Naming ceremonies are a way of formally celebrating a new baby or an older child as part of your family and enabling family and close friends to share your happiness.

All Naming ceremonies have six essential sections:

  • Introduction and welcome
  • Reading
  • Naming of the child or children
  • Parent's promises
  • Promises by supporting adults
  • Closing words

The ceremony is a very personal event. You may also add to the ceremony to make it unique to you. Here are a few examples:

  • include reasons for the names
  • grandparent's promises
  • further readings
  • hopes for the future

A souvenir record is signed during the ceremony by parents, supporting adults and the Naming Officer. The cost of a naming ceremony is £180.

You can have your naming ceremony in the historic wooden panelled Old Council Chambers, one of our Registration Offices or at any of our other approved venues.  You can also have the ceremony in your own home or garden or at one of the many other spectacular locations throughout Perth and Kinross.

Please note that neither the ceremony nor any document issued at a ceremony has any legal status. The ceremony cannot be used to change a child's official name.
