Blair Atholl Conservation Area

Why have we designated a conservation area in Blair Atholl?

All Councils are required to identify areas of special architectural or historic interest and designate these as conservation areas.

The Highland Area Local Plan 2000 contains the proposal to designate a conservation area in Blair Atholl.

We have produced a draft conservation area appraisal which identifies what makes the proposed area of Blair Atholl special and worthy of protection.

What is Conservation Area Appraisal?

A Conservation Area Appraisal is a management tool which helps to identify the special character and changing needs of an area. It serves as supplementary planning guidance to the Local Plan and assists development management.

If a conservation area's special character has been clearly defined and published in an appraisal then this definition can be used to guide the form and design of new development and will assist those proposing to invest in the area.

What did the designation process involve?

We consulted the public, local community groups and national bodies on the draft Blair Atholl Conservation Area Appraisal during September and October 2007, including a public exhibition from 11-13 June.

We collected and considered the responses and amended the draft conservation area appraisal and the draft boundary to take account of these views.  A summary of the consultation responses and how these have been taken into account is available to download.

The final draft appraisal and boundary were approved at the Council's Enterprise and Infrastructure committee on 28 November 2007.  The conservation area is formally designated by advertisement in the local and national press and notification to Scottish Ministers on 14 December 2007, to accord with the requirements of the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.

The finalised conservation area appraisal including the amended boundary can be viewed at Pitlochry Library, 26 Atholl Road, Pitlochry and can be downloaded from this web page.
