Perth Central Conservation Area
Why have we extended the conservation areas in Perth?
All Councils are required to identify areas of special
architectural or historic interest and designate these as
conservation areas.
Seven individual conservation areas were designated between 1972
and 1981, covering large parts of the central area of Perth west of
the Tay. Having re-examined the central area it became clear that
significant areas of architectural and historic interest had been
omitted. The aim was to consolidate the existing areas and include
additional areas in a single new conservation area. Kinnoull
Conservation Area will be re-assessed as a separate exercise during
2008-2009.
We have produced a conservation area appraisal which identifies
what makes the affected area of Perth special and worthy of
protection.
What is Conservation Area Appraisal?
A Conservation Area Appraisal is a management tool which helps
to identify the special character and changing needs of an area. It
serves as supplementary planning guidance to the development plan
and assists development management.
If a conservation area's special character has been clearly
defined and published in an appraisal then this definition can be
used to guide the form and design of new development and will
assist those proposing to invest in the area.
What did the designation process involve?
We consulted the public, local community groups and national
bodies on the draft Perth Central Conservation Area Appraisal
during February and March 2008, including a public exhibition from
21-23 February.
We collected and considered the responses and amended the draft
conservation area appraisal to take account of these views. A
summary of the consultation responses and how these have been taken
into account is available to download.
The final draft appraisal and boundary were approved at the
Council's Enterprise and Infrastructure committee on 3 September
2008. The conservation area is formally designated by
advertisement in the local and national press and notification to
Scottish Ministers on 19 September 2008, to accord with the
requirements of the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation
Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.
The finalised conservation area appraisal including the amended
boundary can be viewed at Planning Reception, Pullar House, 35
Kinnoull Street, Perth PH1 5GD and can be downloaded from this web
page.
