Historic gardens
What is a garden or design landscape?
Often, though not exclusively, large designed gardens and
landscapes were formed as a setting for important buildings, or for
recreation. Many of the buildings for which these landscapes were
formed are afforded statutory protection, although the landscapes
themselves had no specific protection. Historic Scotland
identify 34 such sites in Perth & Kinross as being of
conservation value. The Garden History
Society has identified further sites, which although of
importance, do not remain in their original form
Who designates them?
Since the 1980s there has been a national record of Gardens and
Designed Landscapes compiled by Scottish Natural Heritage and
Historic Scotland. This record, known as the An Inventory of
Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland and now containing 385
sites is maintained by Historic Scotland.
There are 34 entries in the inventory for Perth &
Kinross.
