Historic gardens
What is a historic garden or design landscape?
Often, though not exclusively, large designed gardens and landscapes were formed as a setting for important buildings, or for recreation. Many of the buildings for which these landscapes were formed are afforded statutory protection, although the landscapes themselves had no specific protection. Scottish Natural Heritage and Historic Scotland identify 34 such sites in Perth & Kinross as being of conservation value. The Garden History Society has identified further sites, which although of importance, do not remain in their original form
Who designates them?
Since the 1980s, there has been a national record of Historic Gardens and Designed Landscapes. This record, known as the Register of Historic Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland and now containing nearly 1450 sites, was established, and is maintained by, Historic Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage. There are 34 entries in the register for Perth & Kinross.
