Green Flag Awards
The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of
recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the
country. It was also seen as a way of encouraging others to
achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark
of excellence in recreational green areas.
The Award scheme is similar to the well know Blue Flag scheme that
runs on Britain's beaches, and sites that attain green flag status
demonstrate excellence in management and community engagement. The
award is judged by independent experts who undertake both a
desktop assessment of management plans and maintenance of
the site, and then a site based assessment where they meet with
members of the local community as well as the managers of the
park.
The assessment covers eight criteria and a minimum level needs to be
reached to attain the Green Flag Award. Once a site has been
awarded Green Flag Status, a flag is displayed at the site in
recognition of the award, and is then re-assessed each year to
ensure high standards are maintained.
The Green Flag Award is managed by the Keep Britain

Green Flag Award in Perth and Kinross
Community Greenspace, a part of The Environment Service, is
responsible for managing green spaces, parks and countryside sites
across Perth and Kinross. The Green Flag criteria are used as a
tool to help guide the management of parks and open spaces as a
form of best practice.
On July 23rd, 2009, we were delighted to learn that two sites,
Kinnoull Hill Woodland Park (managed by the Countryside Ranger
Service) and
Larghan Victory Park in Coupar Angus, have been successful in
their bids to become Green Flag sites.
The Green Flag will be displayed prominantly on these sites as a
recognition that they offer excellent recreational spaces for
members of the public to visit and enjoy.
