Aberfeldy placecheck

Aberfeldy Placecheck 2011/12

The Aberfeldy area was been selected to be a Placecheck area 2011/12. This arose after a selection process that took place in 2009. The Placecheck process will start in Aberfeldy during 2011 budget allowing.

Letters of invitation were sent out in March 2009 asking for a note of interest to be expressed by communities of around 2000 residents in taking part in Placecheck. Aberfeldy Community Council submitted a bid detailing what benefits Placecheck would have for the Aberfeldy area and possible ideas for improvements to public space areas. A panel met in May to assess the bids and decide on Placecheck areas for the next 3 years and the Aberfeldy bid was successful.

Diane Cassidy did a presentation with a DVD at an Aberfeldy Community Council meeting in October 2009 to tell people what Placecheck is about and what would happen when Aberfeldy started the Placecheck process in 2011.

If you or your organisation would like to know more about Placecheck please contact Diane Cassidy at placecheck@pkc.gov.uk .

What is Placecheck?

Placecheck is an award winning process about improving public spaces by the council and the community working in partnership. A community Placecheck event is due to take place during the summer of 2011 where there will be an opportunity for local people to walk round different key areas of their village in small groups with Council officers to identify what they like, don't like and what can be improved. The aim is to get people working together to improve their village and surrounding area and work with the Council on shared priorities. Currently The Environment Service has a dedicated budget to take this forward, communities are also expected to research alternative resources to carry out work on priorities identified. For more information on the Placecheck process see: www.placecheck.info

At the Community Placecheck day, the main public space areas of Aberfeldy will be split into zones and the day will start with a walk around  the zones so that people can identify things they would like to see improved in the Aberfeldy's open spaces. After the walkabout everyone will return to the venue to look at the issues raised and prioritise them for action.

The Placecheck Process

The community Placecheck event is just the start of process that takes around 18 months. A Placecheck for children and young people from Bredalbane Academy will also take place before the community event. There will be a follow up event held for the community approximately 3 months after the first event where the community will hear the results of feasibility studies done since the first event and costings for projects that were identified. Following this, designs will be drawn up for each project and shared with the community and further consultation will take place as necessary before work is carried out by the community and the Council working together and identifying funding.
