Dunning Placecheck
What is Placecheck?
Placecheck is an award winning approach
which seeks to work with local residents to identify local issues,
agree priorities, develop an action plan and inform the management
of open spaces within their village.
Awards
The Dunning Placecheck team were awarded a Gold Securing the
Future Award for the "Working with Communities" section on Tuesday
11th May 2010. This recognised the great partnership work
between Perth & Kinross Council and the Dunning
community.
Dunning Placecheck has also reached the second stage of the
Scottish Awards for Quality in Planning and been nominated for the
national Cosla Awards.
Overview of Dunning Placecheck
Dunning Placecheck is a community engagement process with
the residents of Dunning which included the following
activities:
• Saturday 23rd August 2008: Community Placecheck Day in
Dunning Village Hall with residents walking around Dunning and
identifying public space areas that needed attention
• Saturday 15th November 2008: Follow up event in Dunning
Primary School where issues were prioritised by the community
• Monday 30th March 2009: Workshop on park design and routes
to school with children at Dunning Primary School
• Thursday 4th June 2009: Display at Dunning Primary School's
Healthy School's evening
• Wednesday 22nd April 2009: Exhibition at Dunning Village
Hall where the community had an opportunity to look at design
options and make comments and suggestions
• 23rd June to 5th July 2009, 8am to 8pm each day: Exhibition
of final designs in Dunning Golf Club Pavillion
Outcomes
Following on from the Placecheck process the Dunning community
are keen to continue looking after and improving their village and
have set up two new groups. One group is a Volunteer Task
Force whose current projects include looking after things in
the village eg. doing litterpicks, repairing pathways and painting
the old telephone exchange
Another group has also been formed called the Sustainable
Energy Group. This group recently held a meeting in the
village where 60 people attended. They used methods and themes they
had learned from the Placecheck process to facilitate their
meeting. They are now hoping to form a Development Trust with
assistance from the local Senior Community Capacity Building Worker
and apply for grants to set up some sustainable energy projects in
the village.
Although a need for a speed activated road sign at
Romangate was identified in the initial Placecheck events it
was not agreed by the community as a priority. But it will be
possible for a temporary smiley face speed detection sign to
be used at this location on a rota basis.
