Milnathort Placecheck
We are delighted to announce that Milnathort was chosen to host
Placecheck in 2009/10. Placecheck is an
award winning community engagement approach. Below is
information about Placecheck activities that took place in 2009 and
2010 in Milnathort:
Final Exhibition: 4th to 14th May 2010
Following the community event in November, officers drew up
designs for all the Placecheck projects identified and had
exhibitions of these designs every day from the 4th to 14th May
2010. The exhibition venues were the Loch Leven Community Campus
Library, Orwell & Portmoak Church Office, Milnathort Golf Club
and Milnathort Primary School. Everyone in the community was
invited, through a Placecheck newsletter delivered to every
household, to come and look at the designs and make comments.
Here are some of the comments from the public about the
exhibition:
• This is very exciting - well done Diane & Team!
• Many good suggestions.
• Like overall approach and the aims
• Lots of very good proposals to improve the village
• Great proposals generally ? BRING IT ON!
• This is a wonderful opportunity to improve the
village.
• Great seeing all these improvements being proposed.
• Overall good proposals
The plans are still available to view on this webpage, in the
church shop and with Councillor Robertson. There are also revised
plans for South Street in the Church Shop.
The team would like to thank the venues for hosting the exhibition
and the Community Council for delivering the newsletters.
The Placecheck Design team are now collating the comments and will
revise designs as appropriate. A Placecheck newsletter was
published in August 2010 to let people know what projects will be
going ahead and the proposed timescales for completion of
works.
Follow Up Event - November 2009
A follow up Placecheck event took place in Milnathort on
Saturday 28th November in the morning in the Thistle Hotel. The day
started with a presentation by pupils from Milnathort Primary
School on the priorities from the children's Placecheck walks. This
was followed by an interesting talk about how Placecheck is done in
Zambia. The residents and officers then broke up into 4 groups to
look at designs drawn up to address the priorities identified in
August and further prioritise the actions to be taken. People spent
one hour discussing issues on the East side of Milnathort and one

budget allows we will look at doing those items which are numbered
'2' followed by those that are numbered '3'.
Other priorities raised at the event in August may also be
looked at if the budget allows or alternative funding can be raised
by the community.
Placecheck Display - November 2009 to March 2010
There was a display of Milnathort Placecheck information in the
Orwell & Portmoak Church Office from November 2009 to March
2010. This shop, next to the RBS bank is a new community resource,
open to the whole community. Exhibitions were updated
regularly.
Funding Workshop November 2009
At the request of community groups a funding workshop took place
on Monday 30th November in the Loch Leven Campus. A large number of
representatives from community organisations across Kinross-shire
attended the workshop to learn about how to apply for grants and
organise fundraising activities.
Community Placecheck Event - August 2009
The first Placecheck event in Milnathort was held in the morning
on Saturday 29th August 2009 in the Milnathort Thistle Hotel. A
large number of the community came along to this interesting and
enjoyable event. Those present were sent out to walk around
Milnathort which was divided into 5 zones. On the walk people noted
what they liked, didn't like and what they wanted to improve in
Milnathort. They then came back to the hotel for refreshments and
went into groups to prioritise what changes they would like to see
in Milnathort. The priorities identified by the Milnathort
community are available to view in the downloads section. Please
also have a look at the evaluation results in the downloads section
to see what the community thought of the day.
Children and Youth Placecheck Activities - August/September
2009
The children's Placecheck began with a school assembly on the
31st August at Milnathort Primary School followed by every class
going on a Placecheck walkabout to note their suggestions for
improving Milnathort. Their top priorities were to make the park
bigger and better, provide more dog bins, provide more street
lighting especially in the park, make the war memorial prettier and
clean up the rubbish and chewing gum on the streets.
There was also youth Placecheck activities run by the Youth Service
over the summer. The top priorities for action identified by the
young people where: provision of a youth shelter, public toilets
and more dog bins.
Why was Milnathort Chosen for Placecheck?
It was felt the community of Milnathort was well placed to take
Placecheck forward with a large number of potential public
space issues to look at further. The Panel that assessed the bids
felt that the active Community Council and Bloom Committee were
well placed to take the lead on Placecheck. The whole Placecheck
process will take place over approximately an 18 month period. The
relationships and partnerships created and the improvements to the
area developed by the Placecheck process should continue to enhance
the community for many years to come.
Please see the posters and newsletters in the downloads section for
further information
Working with the Community Council, a map of 'zones' has been
identified for looking at during the Placecheck. A larger map is
available in the downloads section.
