Conservation Volunteers
The Conservation Volunteers (or PKCV they are fondly
called!)
The Perth and Kinross Conservation Volunteers are run by the
Countryside Ranger Service. They are a group of adults who meet on
a regular basis 12 - 15 times a year to carry out a wide range of
practical conservation tasks; from tree planting to fencing, from
path work to invasive species control and from pond clearance to
meadow management.
Who, Where and When
Volunteers come from a wide range of backgounds, working,
retired or a member of a community or other group and from
right across (and sometimes outwith!) the boundaries of Perth and
Kinross. Tasks are organised to tailor to this and are carried out
on sites owned and/or managed by Perth and Kinross Council
Countryside Section, or on other land in association with the
owners, right across the County. Equally, tasks are arranged at
both the weekend and during the week and volunteers are encouraged
to offer lifts to each other and to come along, even if they can
only manage a half day.
The Benefits
The main focus of our activities is to improve the environment
of Perth and Kinross's countryside. This may be through direct
conservation works, such as beech removal, or through encouraging
people to enjoy the environment by improving the facilities that
there are.
We would also like to think that YOU the
volunteer would benefit as well! There are opportunities to learn
new skills and to develop an appreciation of the countryside. We
hope that with each new task, our volunteers gain a better
undertsanding of how and why we manage our environment. Through the
work of the PKCV we hope that others become inspired to help look
after the fascinating environment that we are lucky to be a part
of.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we would like you to join in
and have fun! Each task is a social event as well as a work event,
and PKCV offers the chance to meet and share experiences with other
like minded people.
What do I need to bring?
Yourself, your lunch, a drink, suitable old outdoor clothing, a
pair of gardening gloves and waterproofs! We will supply the
tools, materials and spare gloves (if needed) for each
task. Each task is fully risk assessed beforehand, and all our
Rangers are first aid qualified.
Children under 16 should seek advice before attending. Please
consult you doctor to ensure your tetanus injections are up to
date and the suitability of joining the conservation
volunteers in light of any existing medical
conditions.
How much does it cost?
This is the best bit - its FREE! To take part, all you need to
do is fill in the membership form - available on this website or by
calling 01738 475000 and send it into the Countryside Ranger
Service (address on leaflet). In return, we will write to you and
invite you to come along to the next task and we will send you a
six monthly newsletter to keep you up to date. You will also be
invited along to an AGM each year.
