Wildlife and Biodiversity
Last updated | 10/01/2012
Perth and Kinross has a wealth of wildlife!
From ospreys to otters, on rivers and lochs, from peregrine falcons
to rare plants on cliffs and hills, and from red deer to delicate
montane ecosystems, Perth and Kinross has them all!
Why is there so much wildlife here?
Because Perth and Kinross has a mixture of habitats - the places
where animals and plants like to live - from tidal rivers, to
highland muirs, and from rich woodland to coniferous forest, there
is both the space and the habitat suitable for a wide range of
animals.
What is Biodiveristy?
Biodiversity was a term coined in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio
de Janeiro. It is now commonly used and describes the variety of
life. The biodiversity of the planet, a country, or a local area is
the wealth of life that lives there, including all plants and
animals, and even including the genetic differences between plants
and animals!
What are you doing to help our local
Biodiversity?
Perth and Kinross Council is part of the Tayside Local Biodiversity
Partnership and has, through a Biodiversity Coordinator, put
together the Tayside Local Biodiversity Action Plan.

The plan is a guidance document for all the Council to use as a
refernce to make sure that all the wildlife in Perth and Kinross is
protected. It highlights various species and habitats that are of
special importance and need extra protection. The plan also
highlights a number of projects that the Council and Community
Groups, volunteers and others are working on to improve and
protect.
Are you doing anything else?
The Countryside Ranger Service, as well as manging the sites that
the Council own in the best way possible for both people to visit
and the resident wildlife, work with many of the sub-groups of the
Biodiversity Partnership and work on several Tayside wide projects
with other Rangers. These include:
- Red Squirrels
- Wildfowl
- Invasive Species
- Swifts
