Perthshire Big Tree Country
Last updated | 20/10/2007
Trees have long been part of Perthshire's cultural heritage, indeed the oldest organism in Europe - the Fortingall Yew - is one of our trees. At Birnam, a gnarled oak is said to be the last survivor of the wood made famous in Shakespeare's -Macbeth -, while the tallest hedge in the world is a line of beech trees at Meikleour.
As such, these trees are emblematic of the richness of Perthshire's natural environment and ensure the area is deserved of the name Big Tree Country.
The BTC Heritage & Access Project aims to conserve and protect Perthshire's woodland heritage. It promotes greater awareness and understanding of the area through improved access and involvement for everyone.
