Abernethy Paths

The Abernethy Circular Path is a short (3mile) circular path that climbs steeply away from the historic town of Abernethy, before crossing the Burn and heading back into the town. The path gives access to a number of other paths, including a link to a quiet country road and onto Pitmedden Forest and a second link to a short steep climb to the summit of Castle Law, where an iron age fort once stood.
Parts of the path are well surfaced. The link from Church Wynd to Loanhead Quarry follows a private road, before heading onto a well established path that climbs steeply in places. Two flights of steps return you to the level of the burn, where a well surfaced and level path leads to Craigden and onward to Pitmedden. Beyond the burn, steps climb again, before the path starts to return to Abernethy down a steep grassy path (which can be slippery). At the bottom of this slope, a path heads away up to the road and then onto Castle Law, or follow the road downhill for a short distance and follow the old Coach Road, or 'Rough Glen' back to Abernethy.
The path continues on, down some steps and onto a short section of well surfaced path, before entering a field, which you follow around on the left hand side of. The gate at the bottom of the field leads you into a wooded area near the burn, known as Abernethy Den. You cross a bridge at the bottom of the Den, before emerging onto the tarmarced surface of the lower section of the Rough Glen, leading back to Abernethy.
A
leaflet (PDF, 800KB) is available which offers an insight into some of the history of the area. The path is well signed and way marked.
