Integrated appraisal toolkit

What is the Integrated Appraisal Toolkit?

We all have a responsibility to ensure that the choices we make do not compound existing economic, social or environmental inequalities. When developing policies and project proposals, it is essential that their likely impacts are taken into account, so that adverse effects can be avoided or minimised, and opportunities for enhancing economic, social and environmental capital are harnessed effectively.

The Integrated Appraisal Toolkit has been developed to ensure that policies and projects developed in our area integrate fully any economic, social and environmental objectives to ensure we contribute to sustainable development in our area.

It is an interactive and dynamic decision-making support tool, a valuable information source, and a transparent and coherent audit record for those producing policies, programmes and other proposals.

The Toolkit has been designed to address concisely the sustainable development issues that are relevent to our area, whilst incorporating enough flexibility to allow initiatives at all levels to be assessed. Several members of a team can use it simultaneously from different locations, thereby enhancing the dynamics of partnership working.

Is the Toolkit linked to any your sustainable development principles?

The Toolkit is linked to the our Sustainable Development principles, aspirations and reporting framework. You can find out more about them by going to the Sustainable Development page by using the link on the left of this page.

How do I use the toolkit?

You can take a tour around the Toolkit however, you will be unable to use the key features of the toolkit, which is the storage - for return visits - and display (using a 'traffic light' system where green equals sustainable, red unsustainable, and amber cause for concern) of your responses for the self-assessment statements.  To use the full toolkit you will need to register your project or proposal.  The guide you can download from this page will help you through that simple process.

Does it cost anything to use?

It is free to use, free to download and free training is available subject to our resources.  Please contact UK CEED on 01733 311644 for more information or alternatively our Sustainable Development Officer on 01738 475000.

Why use The Integrated Appraisal Toolkit?

We all have a responsibility to ensure that the choices we make do not compound existing economic, social or environmental inequalities, or compromise the ability of future generations to meet their needs. When developing policies and project proposals, it is essential that their likely impacts are taken into account, so that adverse effects can be avoided or minimised, and opportunities for enhancing economic, social and environmental capital are harnessed effectively.

Does it provide me with information about existing policies and good practice?

By using this Integrated Appraisal Toolkit you will have ready access to summarised information on relevant local and regional policy documents and examples of good practice.  We hope to expand this section in the future and have examples from all over the UK. You will be guided through a series of statements to help you decide whether your proposals are contributing fully to sustainable development.

Will it help me develop a better proposal?

The results of your initial appraisal will highlight areas in which you may be able to improve your proposal, either to challenge conflicting responses, overcome adverse effects or to harness economic, social or environmental opportunities that you had not originally anticipated. By adopting an iterative approach to the development of your policy or project proposal, you will stand a better chance of delivering public benefits effectively. Your proposal will be more robust, and is more likely to be looked upon favourably by prospective funding agencies.

What happens to the information I put in?

Any information that you input into the Toolkit during the iteration stages will remain confidential and will not be used by any party other than you and your project team. If, however, you wish to use the completed appraisal to support a planning application, the information you supply will become public information once printed and submitted.

Is there a user guide for the Perth and Kinross Toolkit?

Together with UK CEED we have developed a step by step guide designed to help you navigate around and use the Toolkit to assess or appraise a project or proposal. You can download the User Guide from this page or from within the Toolkit itself.
