Harbour - passage to Perth
Perth Harbour is situated on the River Tay, 30 miles from the North Sea in central Scotland.
Navigation of the River Tay between Dundee and Perth is difficult and can be hazardous. Pilotage from the sea to Balmerino is compulsory and is arranged by Forth & Tay Navigation Service. The Perth Harbourmaster will arrange for the services of local qualified pilots to assist vessels in transit between Balmerino and Perth. The contract for the services of a pilot is between the pilot and the vessel's owner and the account will be submitted directly from the pilot to the shipping agent. Masters are strongly advised to make use of this facility although it is not compulsory and is not provided under the terms of the Pilotage Act 1987.
Masters of vessels should note that the Dundee compulsory pilotage area extends to a western limit delineated by a line extending from, on the north side, the rivulet called the Burnmouth of Invergowrie to; on the south side, the place where the Monastery of Balmerino was situated. This area includes both the Tay road and rail bridges.
