Planning application process
Please note that some important changes to the planning
application process were introduced on 3 August 2009 by the
Planning (Scotland) Act 2006. Please check our
'Modernising the planning system' page for more
details.
What is the planning application process?
Applications have been divided by the Scottish
Government into different categories to ensure that they are
dealt with in a way appropriate to their scale and complexity and
to allow decisions to be taken at the most appropriate level. There
are now different processes involved according to whether
a proposed development falls within the local, major or national
categories. Diagrams showing what happens when you make
an application in the local and major categories are available to
download from this page. You should also look at the other pages on
the site for more information on each stage of the process.
