Design quality
Why have you published a design guide?
We are trying to improve the design quality of building developments within Perth and Kinross and are seeking comments on newly
published draft design guidance.
The guidance is contained in a booklet entitled
Towards Better Design in Perth and Kinross which is now available here or for public inspection in public libraries.
Is there any other information available?
We aim to raise the standard of design quality in the built environment when determining planning applications, to ensure Perth and Kinross is seen as a welcoming, successful and creative place.
The Scottish Government through its 'Policy on Architecture for Scotland' and subsequent 'Designing Places' Policy Statement, Scottish Planning Policies and a variety of Planning Advice Notes, has put design at the forefront of the planning process.
When a planning application is made, the design quality of the proposal is amongst the matters we assess, acting in the public interest and following the above national policies and advice.
We will not grant planning permission for poor quality or inappropriate design. High quality designs, whether or not they are contemporary interpretations of traditional styles, are encouraged where you can demonstrate that you have taken into consideration the existing surroundings.
We believe sustainable development is achieved through close relations between innovation, conservation and regeneration; balancing dynamic change on the one hand with fossilisation on the other; creating a place recognised for its heritage but also for its vitality and vision.
Building and urban design involves particular skills and you are recommended to employ the services of design professionals inclusive of Architects, Urban Designers, and Landscape Architects to give you advice on appropriate design solutions for your project.
