Housing in the countryside

A revised Housing in the Countryside Policy was approved by us on 21 December 2005.

Why was the policy reviewed?

The need to review the policy came in response to a growing awareness of concerns over the previous policy, and in response to the Scottish Planning Policy and Advice Notes: SPP15 Planning for Rural Development; PAN72 Housing in the Countryside and PAN73 Rural Diversification published in February 2005.

What happens next?

The policy will operate as non statutory guidance and be incorporated into Local Plans as and when they are reviewed.  As with the previous policy, it is considered necessary to complement with supplementary guidance on siting and design.

Supplementary Guidance

This will effectively be the update and review of our existing "Guidance on the siting and design of houses in rural areas". While it still provides useful guidance on design, we think it should include guidance on the siting of housing in the countryside and the treatment of the land around the house.  We also think it should encourage more innovative design and modern materials.  In the meantime the existing guidance should be referred to until it is replaced.
